Data, Trust and Public Engagement: Citizen Science Through the Eyes of Researchers

April is dedicated to citizen science, which has become an increasingly important part of research and open science in recent years. How are data collected from the public actually used in practice? What benefits and challenges does this approach bring? And what is needed for its further development in the Czech Republic? Citizen Science as a Tool for Education: Insights from the Conference in Oulu

This March marked the sixth edition of the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) conference, held this time in Oulu. The event attracted several hundred participants from across Europe and beyond. The programme covered a wide range of topics – from sharing experiences and presenting projects to legal aspects and the role of citizen science in education.

April is celebrated worldwide as Citizen Science Month — a time highlighting activity in which members of the public contribute to both data collection and analysis. Globally, tens of millions of people are involved; in the Czech Republic, participation reaches hundreds of thousands each year. Anyone can take part in Citizen Science Month: all it takes is a smartphone, a computer, and the willingness to contribute to research whose results end up in scientific publications and international databases — and in some cases significantly accelerate the pace of discovery.
