Try citizen science for yourself

Sort galaxies by their shape, fill in maps for humanitarian organisations, take part in an online discussion, or record a dialect for a language archive. A series of workshops at Masaryk University will show that almost anyone can contribute to real research — and sometimes all you need is a smartphone.

On 3, 9 and 12 November 2026, the MU Institute of Computer Science is holding a series of hands-on workshops devoted to citizen science.

No long lectures. After a short introduction, participants move between four stations, spending thirty minutes trying out different ways the public can take part in research.

From galaxies to dialects

In the Galaxy Zoo project, you will classify images of galaxies by their shape and help researchers study how galaxies form and evolve.

With Missing Maps, you will look at places that are still blank on ordinary maps. By mapping them, you can support the work of humanitarian organisations in areas where good map data is essential.

The Deliberix platform shows another face of citizen science: a structured online discussion that makes it possible to identify shared priorities while also revealing where participants disagree.

And in the workshop Become a Superdialectologist, you will try making a dialect recording and find out how you can contribute to the archive of the Czech Language Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

All the projects have one thing in common: you can keep taking part after the workshop ends.

Just come along and try it

The workshops are open to everyone at Masaryk University and no prior knowledge is required. All you need to take part is a smartphone.
The workshop on 9 November will be held in English.
