Try citizen science for yourself
A series of citizen science workshops at Masaryk University will show that almost anyone can contribute to real research — and sometimes all you need is a smartphone.
Data are generated through almost everything we do – when we communicate, travel, shop, conduct research or use social media. During the Researchers’ Night at the Faculty of Informatics, Masaryk University, the Open Science and CERIT-SC teams will show how data have evolved over time, what they can reveal about us, how to share them safely, and how artificial intelligence works with them.
Visitors will be able to try quizzes and interactive activities focusing on the history of data storage, different forms of data and data security. They will find out, for example, how much information could fit on a floppy disk, what can be considered data, and what kinds of personal information we routinely share.
The exhibition will also feature citizen science projects demonstrating how members of the public can contribute to real scientific research. These include Language Memory of the Regions, a project focused on preserving and processing Czech dialects and the Brno Emotional Map, whose results help support urban planning. There will also be a fun quiz full of surprises, interesting facts and “aha!” moments from the world of citizen science.
There will also be a practical demonstration of artificial intelligence. Visitors will be able to see how a simple computer game can be created using just a straightforward text prompt.
